Proposed Public Works Maintenance Facility

Our position:

Schenley Park is not a land bank. We believe that the park should be preserved as a park, not as a location for municipal maintenance operations and non-recreational facilities.

On Monday, August 10, the Department of Public Works hosted an informational meeting for architects and engineers interested in submitting proposals for a new "Schenley Division" maintenance facility on Prospect Drive, in Schenley Park. The deadline for proposals is September 6. DPW will select a firm in September or October. The targeted site is outlined in the photo below, and is located behind the three men facing the camera at right.

DPW said that the building, which serves 24 parks as far away as the Hill District and Polish Hill, would need to at least house snowplows and salt spreaders, provide storage for fertilizer, pesticides and road salt, and manage stormwater and waste disposal.

This is an unacceptable use of park land. An alternative location, outside Schenley Park, must be found.
